GILBERT, Ariz. – Residents of this Phoenix-area suburb may have seen a new ambulance rolling around town recently.

The Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department launched its first ambulance service last week. Medic 253 is crewed by civilian emergency medical technicians (EMT) and paramedics out of Fire Station 3.

“We are excited to launch our first ambulance service,” said Gilbert Fire and Rescue Chief Jim Jobusch. “Adding ambulance services is in line with Gilbert’s City of the Future initiative, ensuring that if there is a disruption in service from the private sector, we will continue to have the ability to get patients to the hospital when they need it most.

“Gilbert will continue to work with our private ambulance partner, American Medical Response (AMR), and AMR will remain the primary ambulance transportation service in Gilbert.”

The department says the goal is to maintain fast and efficient response times and Medic 253 will be dispatched based on the call’s location and proximity. Billing for the transportation service will be set by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
